By the year 2040 we aim to transform the canals of Amsterdam into a network of Aquaponics. Designed to clean the canals and feed locals.

Long description

Aqua-wha?

For those who don’t know what Aquaponics are: Aquaponic is the cultivation of fish and plants together in a constructed, recirculating ecosystem utilizing natural bacterial cycles to convert fish waste to plant nutrients. This is an environmentally, friendly, natural food-growing method that harnesses the best attributes of aquaculture and hydroponics, without the need to discard any water or filtrate or add chemical fertilizer. (thanks Mediamatic for this brief explanation)

Why the canals?

The canals are our trademark. We party on them, piss in them, throw bikes in them, fall in them, live on them, boat on them and if we’re lucky skate on them. But the weird thing is, we don’t do anything sustainable with them, or have the slightest urge to keep them clean.

Our (water) way to a greener city.

Bringing aquaponics to the canals shows the world that Amsterdam is capable of adapting to changing times, while retaining its world famous, picturesque heritage. It keeps the canals clean while also providing fresh and local food to Amsterdammers.
