Floating energy – bio modules in the Markermeer lake, can be used to produce and store: energy, food, biomass and data in a symbiotic way
Long description
Floating energy – bio modules in the Markermeer lake, can be used to produce and store: energy, food, biomass and data in a symbiotic way with the lake’s biodiversity and recreational use, without having big visual impact. By applying large numbers of these modules in the Markermeer lake the Amsterdam metropolitan region can supply all of his electricity needs by just covering only 15-20% of the lake with solar tracking floating solar panels. By cleverly combing these modules with food production, aquaculture, energy-storage, floating bio-refineries and hydrogen/biogas plants in a symbiotic ecosystem, costs can be reduced while these technologies can be applied more efficient. Floating energy storage, both short-term and long-term, can stabilize the grid to deal with intermittency of renewables, while floating bio-gasification or hydrogen plants and bio-refineries using biomass from kelp or algae on floating modules, can provide in biogas and bio-chemicals for the (bio-based) industry. The honeycomb design of the floating bio-energy modules provides a robust floating framework to install many different functions and allow for many different configurations. The scale, standardised measurements and the simple fact these honeycomb modules are floating allow for easy replacement, maintenance and reduction in costs. Floating biorefineries and aquaculture farms can be used as innovation labs for research and development to accelerate the transition towards a biobased-economy. The floating modules itself also form a habitat for marine life which enhances the biodiversity of the lake. Wind turbines (which still be needed) can be placed further from the coast with in-between
