The project has two aspects; today's food tomorrow(excess food) and post harvest treatment(increase shelf life).
Long description
Today’s food tomorrow handles food that would normally go to waste by enlisting food joints in an app where they post food at reduced prices for people to pick up after work instead of it being thrown away. Food joints would need to package the left over food for pick up by customers who place orders via the app and this can be used as a meal in the evening for people living in the city
Post harvest treatment uses biotechnology to treat fruits with a coating which prevents dehydration and oxidation thus add to their shelf life. This treatment seeks to address the main enemies of fruit longevity, loss of water(dehydration) and effects of oxygen(oxidation)Most fruits have oil cells in their exocarp(outer layer/skin) which acts as a barrier to prevent loss of water which makes them wrinkle. The oil treatment would also keep out oxygen by providing extra layer of protection thus increase the shelf life of the fruit.Special food sources such as potatoes would undergo on farm processing and supplied on demand( peeled and packages in food grade bags with brine solutions which are delivered to food joints and cooked directly thus reduce the waste and labour which comes with preparing them). Waste from peels would be recycled on the pack house at the farm and used as manure in the fields or as input to generate biogas which will be used at the packhouse
