This is a project aimed at mitigating rampant energy poverty within Kibera slums through provision of solar lamps to more than 2000 people.
Long description
Most people living in Kibera slums do not have electricity connections. Families use dangerous fossil fuels for lighting and cooking. Dwelling shanties measure 10 x 10 feet. Kerosene is a combustible liquid which is damaging to health and causes fires which usually burn homes and kill young children. When inhaled, kerosene fumes or smokes usually lead to long term respiratory illnesses. Besides, the performance of children at school is grossly affected because of lack of clean lighting for doing their home-work at night. Furthermore, food which is prepared and sold by small scale business women at the road sides at night are prone to contamination by emission of carbon from the fossil fuels they use for lighting. This is dangerous to health. KISCODEP has partnered with Gennex Solar, a UK based company manufacturing and selling solar products. Solar lamps are safe, reliable and durable. One lamp is enough to light a room like a bulb. The partnership is aimed at mitigating energy poverty and its side effects. They intend to sell to us one lamp at a subsidized cost of Kshs 300 per lamp instead of the market price of Kshs 700. KISCODEP in turn will sell to the poor households at Kshs 150 per lamp. The amount charged by KISCODEP will be to meet the administrative and logistic costs in an endeavour to manage our cash-flow. Moreover, Gennex Solar has agreed to train a few of Kibera youth, the skills required for maintenance and local assembly of the products.
