Collab-design that involves local communities to foster the appropriation of waste management issues from the neighborhood to the regional

Long description

Waste production and management have been overly addressed issues. To such extent that individuals, institutions and local organizations are exceeded by the scale of the challenges. Our goal is got back to the local and politicize communities towards waste management challenges, to do so we propose a collaborative design approach that actively involves local communities to foster the appropriation of waste management issues and solutions. This methodology is based on a public pedagogy strategy that addresses local needs and strengthens waste reduction, recycling, and reuse culture. Our methodology is applied at the neighborhood level and in the long-term it seeks to create networks that connect the urban-rural areas in Mexico City to create a complete waste to energy cycle. Design and creative processes enable us to look at problems from alternative perspectives. We rely on these as our key tools to bring about new solutions that answer to specific local needs while actively engaging the community. The project development is divided into six stages: 1)Local Assessment 2) Analysis, 3) Prototyping + Validation 4) Final proposal5)Implementation 6)Impact Evaluation.

No challenge should be addressed in isolation, this methodology aims to tackle waste management challenges while addressing urban marginality and social disparities by strengthening social tissue at the neighborhood level.
