Every 2 years we double the amount of information. Datacenters always have to be on. They’re always consuming energy. Datacenters have as big a carbon footprint as airline industry, and 39% of electricity is spent on HVAC cooling. It concerns every BigData,HighPerformanceComputing,Cloud, IT or Telecommunication system worldwide. And the problem is rising with more sensors, IOT, ElectricVehicles, SmartCars and TVs – everything has computer inside and everything finally connects to servers somewhere. All those applications and services (number is growing each months) need tens of thousands of servers Sometimes energy spend reaches over 50% of total energy used in infrastructure. On top of current 2.5-3% global energy spend we got lately blockchain revolution where power usage is enormous, it uses currently 1.5-1.8% of global energy and it’s killing power balance of northern countries and regions example: Iceland. Some way to cope it is to locate datacenter in northern hemisphere, but only largest cloud providers – google, facebook, microsoft can use such method. And it occupies very large area, you need special servers and you can fit only 10-15kW into one rack, so for thousands of servers you need also huge infrastructure to move air: fans, airducts, large space. Others – literally millions of datacenter must use power hungry air conditioning that use chillers with refrigerant gases that consume 50% of energy in datacenter. Power & cooling is the biggest challenge when running that business. There is no revolutionary it technology that allows to compute without huge heat generated.
