An exploration of prospects for improvisation of existing waste management infrastructure to regenerate the area into an active usable space
Long description
The mismatch between diffused urbanization pattern and the mainly centralized infrastructural systems which support their daily operations is visible in the Okhla Waste Management Zone i.e. landlocked between heavy residential settlements on all sides. The waste management area although serving the greater purpose of tackling the city’s waste has a different impact on the site, at the local scale-its local condition and its people. The project is an attempt to blur the line between the waste management zone and the immediate residential setup. Back in the 1940’s, the Okhla drainage zone was selected and an effluent wastewater treatment plant was set up in the then Delhi’s fringe area that lied in the South of Delhi. Initially, it had a rudimentary technology and few settlements such as Okhla and Jasola gaon, M.Khadar, Sarai Julena around it. As time passed, the population density increased and currently it is surrounded by a population of 10 lakhs. There were alterations in this zone as well. A compost plant and a waste to energy plant are recent additions and it was transformed into an ‘Integrated Waste Management Zone’. In the present scenario it has become a concentrated site of all forms of pollution. This impacts the public health of around 10 lakh population living around. A need for the amelioration of the waste management zone is established. For a better-used public space, a public realm is created after remediating the environmental pollution. A comprehensive development plan is made to use the barren land.
