Have you seen all the chimneys in Amsterdam? Have you wonder how much heat are they releasing on the air that could be used?
Long description
The heat coming out of Amsterdam’ chimneys can be used to generate energy by attaching / inserting small turbines to them. The turbine will be formed by a propeller that will be inside the chimney (or a duct attached to the chimney), therefore by Bernouli’s effect, the amount of thrust needed to move the propeller will be much less with a higher efficiency. The heat of the vapor will make the propeller to turn, which will be connected to a small generator, either the permanent magnet type, or the new superconductor type just finished testing by TNO and Twente University. The electrical power generated that way can be stored inside the house in a set of batteries/capacitors, ready to be used into the house’s electrical network.
This system can also be used on industrial chimneys that are already out there, like the chimney of Nuon for example, and the electric power so generated deviated to the Amsterdam’s electrical network.
Additionally, on the roofs of buildings can be installed Savonious Wind Turbines, which are much smaller yet still generate enough power to maintain communication systems for example, as seen on this link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wlxz-KzebbQ
Finally, with all the organic rests from restaurants it is possible to use them to generate biogas, using small biodigesters, which are safe and that also as end product give fertilizer.
There is no single solution to tackle Amsterdam’s clean energy problem but a mixed solution that in combination can add as a complemented solution.
